The Story
When I dove in to learning Unity, I worked on several ‘tutorial’ projects to learn what I was doing and build skills for my first big project. The last of these was to recreate Super Mario Bros in Unity. I got the environment, character, and basic movement done when I decided to add a double jump just to see if I could. I added a small handful of other features that sounded fun to work on, and before long I knew that this project had grown beyond recreating Super Mario Bros. I decided to make this my first original project.
I still had so much that I needed to learn, such as 2D animation which I had never worked with before. I picked these skills up as I went and as I needed them. Eventually, the mechanics and art for the game was done… or so I thought. I got pages of notes from play tests of puzzles that were too difficult, dialogue that made no sense, game mechanics that didn’t work, and other bugs and rough spots. This was the most daunting phase of the project. I was so close and yet it felt so far away. But, eventually, I got everything ironed out, and boy am I glad I did! Homebound is a much better game because of all the feedback I got. In the end, I was proud to release Homebound and call it my own.
